Plays Blu-ray discs: Want the sharpest, highest-quality DVD picture available? Blu-ray is a new hi-def video technology that far surpasses ordinary DVD. Traditional DVD video resolution is 480i or 480p—while Blu-ray HD resolution is up to 1080p. That means that Blu-ray is two to five times sharper than ordinary DVD! To watch Blu-ray discs (BD) in hi-def, you'll need an HDTV. To view Blu-ray at the highest definition (1080p), a 1080p HDTV is necessary.

Blu-ray disc technology: Blu-ray gets its name from its use of a blue laser technology that enables the storage of large amounts of information on a disc (large disc capacity is necessary for recording HD video). High-definition DVD players currently come in two formats (HD-DVD or Blu-ray). This model plays Blu-ray discs exclusively.

Standard DVD compatibility and upconversion: The Sony Blu-ray player is compatible with traditional DVDs so you can continue to enjoy your current DVD collection—plus, the player’s upconversion feature actually upgrades ordinary DVDs to near-HD quality. So even your non-HD titles will look better than before.

Extraordinary sound: Most DVD players compress audio files, which causes increased sound distortion and lower audio quality. Sony’s Blu-ray player offers theater-grade uncompressed 5.1-channel audio. This player also includes Dolby® Digital Plus (audio stream only), Dolby® TrueHD (audio stream only) and dts®-HD (audio stream only) decoding capability.

HDMI interface with HDMI cable: The Sony Blu-ray player offers an HDMI cable connection for the high-quality, uncompressed video and audio. Plus, if your HDTV does not have an HDMI connection, you can still enjoy Blu-ray via the 1080i analog output.

Multiple playback formats: The BDP-S1 plays Blu-ray discs, DVD-video, and MP3 and JPEG files from DVD media.
